           Being able to jump back in time but unable to change past events wouldn’t frustrate me at all. NOT. I would constantly be trying to figure out what the heck is the purpose of my ‘gift’. This is my first impression of Jackson. He has this power. He doesn’t understand it, and he is frustrated by it. Wow does that change fast! In one night, Jackson is thrown into a world of chaos where nothing is as it seems. Unanswered questions, shocking discoveries, and desperate searches all add up to one final conclusion. When a situation is this precarious, Jackson has to find the right person to trust.

           Tempest is like drinking a cold glass of water after being in the desert for a month. Refreshing, fulfilling, and in dire need of a warning label saying: “Don’t consume too quickly -- slow down and savor it”. Seriously. This book is just that good. About a month ago, I began hearing amazing things about Tempest and was instantly intrigued. Then, about a week later… BOOM… Tempest started popping up everywhere. And I do mean EVERYWHERE. So many people singing praises for Tempest confirm my initial reaction: this book is made of awesome.

           The praises and the premise aren’t the only great things about Tempest; the characters and the details Cross adds to the story are a huge reason that I like it. I am not a guy. That said, I think Cross does a fantastic job of getting inside a guy’s mind, and a teen at that! Jackson isn’t perfect. He makes mistakes, he ticks people off, and he says the wrong things. I LOVE that he doesn’t know exactly what to say to Holly or what he says that makes her mad. A lot of guys just don’t have a clue what they do that irks me: I have to explain, and so does Holly.

           I really like the way Holly’s character is written. She comes to life, and her reactions all strike me as genuine. There is a big change from High School Holly to post High School Holly. She becomes more restrained as she grows older, and these changes are obvious. Hopefully, I’ll get a closer look at Holly in book two! Adam is the other crucial character that I really feel connected too. Adam is, without a doubt, the brains of the operation. He is that kid who sits in the back of science class who everyone just KNOWS will discover the cure for cancer. Adam is quirky and fun but still faithful and a wonderful friend to both Jackson and Holly. To sum up this long review, let me just say: I LOVED THIS BOOK TO PIECES!

The Cover:

           This cover is so detailed. Now really, could it be more fitting? I never tried to imagine what a time travel book cover would look like because most authors wouldn’t try it. All those other authors are crying because they didn’t think of this first. I love how the girl is reaching up while I can see she is falling back down away from him. I also like how he is grasping for her hand and seems intent on catching her before she slips to far away. This cover is fantastic!

I give Tempest 5 out of 5 hearts: I LOVED IT!!

If I could see glimpses of the past, believe me when I say that I would be working with the new detective’s smoldering son to solve a murder case! Clarity Fern has always had a very indifferent out look on her “gift”. But, when the chance to solve a murder and save her brother arises, she will do everything in her power to prove he is innocent. Teaming up with her ex-boyfriend is not high up on her list of things to do. However, the chance to clear her brother’s name and to work with the smoking hot son of the new detective proves to be an irresistible combination!

What first strikes me while reading Clarity is how quickly I am introduced to Clare. Almost immediately I KNOW her. She acts tough and uses her words to push others away, but deep down she’s just a little girl who wants to feel safe and loved. Her big brother (Perry) is her world. She even lies for him. In fact, I can’t think of anything she wouldn’t do for him. He is her rock. A huge part of this book is about understanding the relationship between Clare and Perry. Without grasping this relationship, decisions they both make would be impossible to comprehend. I definitely sense Clare’s family loyalty from the fact that, while she can forgive her brother almost anything, no one else better even think about crossing her.

Clare obviously has a complicated history before I am introduced to her. I can tell she has an estranged relationship with Justin, her ex., but I don’t know exactly what happened. I think Harrington weaves in the background information very well. She doesn’t just start off the book with a 15 page preface that details what happened BM (Before Murder) but, by the end of the story, I understand Clare’s past. This book does have a love triangle and, unlike the last few stories I have read with these, it pulls it off well. I really dislike when an author writes a love triangle where one of the two guys NEVER has a chance. This situation isn’t like that; I STILL don’t know whom she’s going to choose!

I love how this book is written. It is a quick read, but I don’t feel like the story line is rushed at all. Yes, it ends with some unanswered questions, but it doesn’t stop on a complete cliffhanger! Clarity captures and holds my attention. This book is amazing, and I cannot wait to see where the second book takes Clare!

The Cover:

This cover is so beautiful! I don’t know if the image shows just how intricate the design work is, but if not: ZOOM IN. Her hair has some very strategically placed swirls that double as waves in her hair. With the ocean and seagulls in the background and the sun directly behind her, the backdrop for the girl is breathtaking. Add in a set of piercing eyes, that I believe can see my secrets, and we have a fantastic paranormal/ fantasy cover

I give Clarity 5 out of 5 hearts: I LOVED it!

Q: Activity!!! Take a picture or describe where you love to read the most...

I love to read in my bedroom with a stack full of pillows behind me. Sometimes I prop up my arms or lay down on my stomach, but my bed is the place to read! My brother even jokes that it is my 'set-up' LOL. I will, sometimes, read on the couch but after a few hours it messes up my back. I have always dreamed of having a window seat with big wide window overlooking a beautiful scene. Since that doesn't seem likely anytime in the near future I will hope you all have a more interesting place than mine. Well, I'm off to check out your special places! =)

How do you pick up the Scattered Pieces?

Book Summary:

It's only through Katie's friendship with the irrepressible Marilyn, and Marilyn's handsome brother Tom, that she navigates a lonely childhood. In college, studying psychology helps Katie understand her mother's deteriorating mental state and her own fears. It also leads to a client who may hold clues to the mystery of her brother's disappearance.”

Sure, my brother and I don’t always get along, but that doesn’t mean I want him kidnapped! Katie is forced to grow up FAST when her younger brother is snatched, right from her grasp, at a crowded train station. Her family starts to deteriorate as each member deals with his or her grief in their own way. Katie learns to open up to those closest to her and slowly voices her fears about that day: that it was all her fault. With her friends beside her, Katie comes to terms with the events of that terrible day and starts to move on…

This book is technically considered Women’s Adult Fiction but, since a HUGE part of the book deals with Katie growing up and her challenges in high school, I decided to give it a whirl. Honestly, it is one of my better decisions. Scattered Pieces is wonderful! The writing is descriptive, alluring, and haunting. When little Jimmy goes missing, I can FEEL the panic and the terror that overwhelms Katie. The despair that envelops her family is like a cloud, thick and tangible. Throughout Scattered Pieces, I see Katie and her best friend Marilyn grow and change. Katie chooses a career in psychology, while Marilyn chases dreams of acting and modeling. Lynn has a way of letting me see the world and events from Katie’s perspective.

I think Alice Lynn’s background really adds to Scattered Pieces -- she has a degree in psychology. What does this mean? It means that she actually knows what she’s talking about. I feel this adds greatly to Scattered Pieces because Lynn doesn’t just say Katie’s mom is sinking into depression, she shows the mental and physical symptoms as well.

The only thing I don’t like about this book is its sad subject matter. A little boy being kidnapped is sad. No way around it. That said, the rest of the book is about how Katie and her family deal with the tragedy and how they let it change them. This heart-wrenching book is very realistic and definitely connects me emotionally to the characters!

The cover:

Puzzle pieces. Those little things are known for getting lost under couches and mysteriously disappearing, leaving the puzzle incomplete. How fitting, then, that the puzzle pieces with Katie’s family members on them don’t fit together. They are separated. This cover is a wonderful choice for Scattered Pieces!

*This book does have a couple mildly inappropriate sexual scenes but they are easy to avoid.

I give this book 5 out of 5 hearts: I LOVED IT!!

No one said being a teen is easy. Cody Everett is that one punk everyone remembers from high school as “trouble”. That kid who sneaks out for a smoke, graffities buildings, and says things just to watch people squirm. Would you take him in after the police pull him over, again? I don’t know if I would, yet that’s exactly what his uncle Race does. After testing his uncle, multiple times, Cody begins to realize that maybe Race does care, and he starts to let down his guard. Then tragedy strikes, and Cody is left wondering why he ever bothers and thinking it might be time to just give up for good…

This book is an emotional rollercoaster. I start out thinking Cody is just some disrespectful punk who has some major anger issues, but now I am happy to say I was totally and completely wrong. Cody has baggage, sure, most of us do, and past experience definitely accounts for his trust issues. At the beginning of Running Wide Open, I want to smack Cody every time he‘s rude or belittling to Race, but the more I read, I realize that it’s his defense mechanism kicking in. Then, I (im)patiently wait in anticipation for that moment when he will cave in and completely trust Race.

Typically, I love books that have romance in them; they appeal to me as a teen and connect me to the story. Running Wide Open doesn’t have any major romance. Actually, with Cody there is NONE. Truthfully though: I don’t even notice. This book catches and holds my attention so well that I‘m not even worrying about when or if a girl will come into Cody’s life, I just want to see if he will unintentionally drink rotten milk again. Yeah, you read that right.

Running Wide Open is a MAJOR character-building book, and it ties me to the characters: all of them. Normally, I feel a connection to the main character, but here I feel connected to not only Cody, but also to Race, and even to Cody’s dad! I really feel like I am a part of the family and completely, emotionally connected to the story. I will admit that I cried. Twice. Yes, it is that moving. Yes, it is that touching. Yes, you should read it.

The Cover:

This cover has many bright colors that all work well together to make this image interesting. The car, the stadium, the guy, all of these elements perfectly fit into this story. Personally, I really want to reach into the cover and force the guy (Cody) to turn around so I can see what he looks like!

*I cannot wait to read Book II: Getting Sideways, it looks AMAZING!!*

I give Running Wide Open 4.5 out of 5 hearts: Very Highly Recommended!!

Well.....probably Desolation from Ali Cross's book Beocme. I think it is the most unique character name and one that still perfectly fits the character! So many books have characters with unusual or unique names, what is the most unique character name YOU have come across?

Midnight Child

I give this book 4.5 out of 5 hearts: Very Highly Recommended.

~This review is for Book # 3, I suggest you read my earlier review of Whispering Evil BEFORE reading this one. This review contains spoilers for Book #2. ~

Book summary:

           “So you read the prophecy. It’s all mystical, but pretty vague. Am I right? Those three, short lines are absolutely frustrating. Lucky me, I’m the one who’s supposed to figure it out. My name is Keira Ryan. I’m the child born of sun and moon.

           Join Keira as she chases her destiny in this exciting third installment of the Midnight Guardian Series. While Keira searches, the mogdocs draw closer and a new alliance emerges to threaten the existence of her charge, the midnight child. A strange locket passed to her on Christmas Eve may be the key. Secrets are unlocked at the Great Serpent Mound. A history of trust is tested. A promise of passion turns deadly. A surviving evil creates doubt and there’s only one way to stop it…Find the Gift.

Just what do you get the spoiled gremlin queen that has everything?”

           “Yeah, we need to have a kid.” If I were Keira and I heard that, I would run. Far and fast. After William (Brun: high prince of the mogdoc) springs his interpretation of “The Prophesy” on Kiera, things get a little crazy. Colby starts to act weird and, soon enough, Keira is cut off from him and their friendship. Ann is a true, good friend, but she has her own issues to deal with and can’t always be around. Arden—Keira’s trainer—is great, if not a little overprotective. On top of it all, Kiera keeps getting surprise visits from Brun… everywhere. He shows up outside, in cars, in the woods, and even in her bedroom. Top it all off with a psycho queen who wants to kill her and all her friends, and we have a must read story!

           Midnight Child is the third book in the Midnight Guardian series and continues Bryna Butler’s tradition of greatness. This book captures and holds my attention until the very last page. It fills my mind, and I just can’t put it down until I reach the end. Throughout the story, the plot twists and turns intrigue me. The character depth is complex and, in some cases, shocking. I really like how this story develops, from the beginning to the end. So many things change: including my opinion of a few characters.

Kiera is a wonderful, powerful protagonist who, from the beginning, jumps out of the book and captivates me. Her devotion to keeping her charge and her friends safe is one of her many charms. One thing that I love about Butler’s writing is that she makes the world very realistic. Yes, this is a YA Fantasy, Paranormal, Fiction book, but the key elements are dead on. For example, Kiera makes some bad decisions that actually have consequences. She doesn’t just walk away every time a fight breaks out unscathed because she’s special. I think that is one of the most important aspects of this entire series, and especially Midnight Child!

The Cover:

           Okay, my first reaction to this cover: “Why is the baby screaming???” That reaction is quickly followed by: “If a baby dies, I will personally kill the mogdoc that did it.” To me, this cover sums up the story: keeping Drew safe. I assume that the little boy is Drew and, from the beginning, I can only wonder what has him in such a terror. This cover is such a great way to spark interest in the story underneath!

"I'm a midwestern girl, born in Indiana, raised in Missouri, who moved out to Oregon for college in 1993. I attended U of O in Eugene, and nearly graduated with a double major in English and Theatre. After a short stint in Portland, I moved to Los Angeles to become an actress and ended up going to culinary school instead. I met my husband in L.A. and after four years of living in Venice Beach, I persuaded him to leave sunny California and head back to Oregon. We've lived here since 2002 and have a son and a daughter."

1) How would you describe yourself?

Crazy busy, ambitious, adventurous.

2) When you sit down to write a new book do you start with an outline or do you just start writing?

I just start writing. I usually don't do an outline until I'm about halfway through a book, so I can get my thoughts in order. I'm writing a book with Vicki Keire and we're outlining. Here's to new experiences!

3) What is the best advice you have ever been given?

Keep your eyes on your own paper.

4) In one sentence why should we read Glimpse?

Let me entertain you.

5) Are you a night owl or an early bird?

Both. I never sleep. Too many things to do!

6) If you could meet anyone in the world present or past who would it be?

I'd love to meet Amelia Earhart. I was obsessed with her when I was in high school.

7) Which do you enjoy more; reading or writing?

I probably enjoy reading more because it's never work. I love to write, but it's not easy.

8) Do you ever get tired of answering emails?

Not really. Although, I have to get away from the computer for a whole day from time to time or my brain feels fried. My reward for this is usually 100 e-mails the next day. :)

So there they are, my initial reactions. I hope this sparks some curiosity as to exactly what these stories are about. What? Need more convincing? Fine. Since you asked so nicely, I will share my thoughts on this anthology as a whole. Ahem…

I have never been one to read anthologies; I think this is because I form an emotional attachment to the characters, and then BOOM they’re gone. That said, this book is wonderful. As in, curl up on the couch, grab a cup of tea, and daydream about these guys after reading all their stories. All of the short stories are from the guys’ POV. It’s a very refreshing change from the normal, female protagonist approach. With all of these amazing guys, the biggest challenge is simply choosing your favorite crush! One thing that I really love about In His Eyes is that I still understand and connect with the short stories, deleted scenes, and prequels that are associated with books that I haven’t read yet. Each of the authors does an amazing job of tying me to the characters and, when needed, providing background information to help set up the stories. All of these short stories are very well written and have a definite flow making them easy to read.

Another quality that makes this book so amazing is its diversity. All of these stories are YA fiction, but some of them are contemporary, some are paranormal, some are fantasy, a few are sci-fi, and I even classify one as historical. With all of these different genres, there is sure to be a perfect story for just about anyone’s taste.

The cover:

Well lets see: this cover is steamy. Just look at the heart, it screams romance. I really love how the guy and girl are looking at one another through the heart in the mirror as they are leaning in for a kiss. They don't even seem to be aware of a mirror between them. So romantic. I hope they both get that kiss!

Basically, I absolutely LOVE In His Eyes and recommend it to anyone who loves YA, yummy guys, mystery, and a whole lot of romance!

~This review is for Book # 2, I suggest you read my earlier review of Book #1: Of Sun and Moon BEFORE reading this one. This review contains spoilers for Book #1. ~

I found two different book summaries and can’t decide which one to post, so here are both of them!

“Keira faces her greatest challenge yet…her driving test. She has a mogdoc ally, a hot new guardian mentor and is ready to take on a new ruler of the Mogdoc Empire. Too bad the guardian elders won’t let her. On the other hand, when has Keira ever asked for permission?”

“Keira Ryan has moved on. It’s the start of her sophomore year at Valley View High School. She's got a cute, new guardian mentor, an unlikely mogdoc ally, and she's dating her best friend. Now, all she has to do is pass her driving test and figure out how to stop the new Empress and her reign of terror.

Will she survive it all or will she fall victim to the whispering evil that surrounds her?”

After reading Of Sun and Moon, its sequel, Whispering Evil, has some impressive shoes to fill, and I think it fills them nicely! Keira starts this book completely happy: her best friend is now her boyfriend, she gets to see her charge, and, best of all, she’s old enough to get her drivers license. The downside? She is still the child of the prophesy (destined to sacrifice a human), her ex-boyfriend-turned-mogdoc keeps popping up to prove he’s not a villain, and her boyfriend starts to act really weird. Great. Just what she needs.

I really like Whispering Evil-- it is fast paced and fun to read. I enjoy the twists and turns the plot takes and, even though a few times I’m ripping my hair out in frustration when a character does something I know is going to come back to bite them in the butt, I still enjoy, and will reread, this book. One thing that I find odd is how my feelings towards Colby change. In Of Sun and Moon, I just wanted Colby and Keira to be together, but in this book I start to feel that it just isn’t worth it at all. Keira and William belong together, and it seems like all she and Colby are doing is being awkward and ruining their friendship!

Colby feels “off” in this book -- it’s like all of a sudden he just forgets how close he and Keira used to be. Yeah, okay, she’s keeping secrets from him. The strange thing is that previously, when he found out she’s a flipping TOOTHFAIRY, he had little-to-no problem accepting it, but NOW he’s just going to wig out on her? True, it’s not exactly that simple, but that’s how it feels.

With Keira in Of Sun and Moon, I had gotten used to her being tough and never letting things get to her…she stood her ground, and I really respected that about her character. However, in Whispering Evil, she reacts emotionally to a few situations and that just strikes me as “off”. I mean, her best friend (also known as her boyfriend) starts to act like a jerk, and she gets upset and leaves. To me, I can see her yelling, refusing to move, or possibly slapping him, but to get upset and leave? It doesn’t seem like Keira. Maybe she is not willing to risk losing the friendship and that causes her to just let it go. But, I really wish that she would stay and fight.

Though some of the actions confused me, the character complexities that were shown in Of Sun and Moon are still present, as well as the same great writing style. Butler continues to do a great job of showing AND telling creating another great story that is fun to read! I really like where Whispering Evil ends. It is in a good spot that leaves the direction of the next book wide open. I cannot wait to see what happens with Will, Keira, and the mysterious prophecy that has everyone on edge!

The Cover:

This cover is BEAUTIFUL. The girl on the front, leaning back, makes the cover look bigger than it really is. I really like how the girl is looking up at the wisps of green and just staring at them, as though she just can’t figure out what they want from her. This artwork has a haunting feel to it that fits very well with the book’s mystery.

Q: What would your prefer: reading your favorite book over and over again until you got sick of it OR reading 100s of mediocre books? And why?

I would prefer to read my favorite book over and over again. Every time I go back and reread a book, no matter how well I know it, I notice a new detail. I always feel like I walk away with something knew, whether it be a new plot development I missed, or just a new take on a character. Mediocre books are great to read and they give you new ideas and things to think about but books you TRULY love are irreplaceable and, to me, a much better use of time! Then again I always want to give a book I THINK will be mediocre a try... who knows it might make it into my favorites list!

If I lost my parents suddenly, in a wild animal attack, I sure would learn how to keep my distance. I mean, I would have just experienced someone I love being ripped away. Well, that is exactly how Eren feels as she goes to live with her aunt in Spruce Knoll. But after running into Aiden, an attractive boy with whom she forms a fast friendship, she realizes that forming attachments again might not be so bad. However, with her aunt and newfound “friend” acting so strange, Eren quickly realizes that here in Spruce Knoll all is not as it seems.

This book is downright magical… no, really. A huge portion of this book is about magical powers and abilities. Many of the struggles Eren faces have to do with coming into and developing her own powers, but magically is only one of the ways Eren changes in Spruce Knoll. I really love Eren’s growing connection to her newly-discovered family. They have a very laid-back relationship that is easy to envy. One of the things that I truly admire about The Secret of Spruce Knoll is that if I take out all the magical parts (not that I would ever want to), McKorkle still delivers a good story. The characters’ development, as individuals, families, friends, etc., is wonderfully done, and it really ties me emotionally to the characters.

One thing that stands out to me is that this book is well balanced. While her aunt and grandfather accept her, and they all get along seamlessly, the rest of the town is bitter and discriminatory. Eren’s new life in Spruce Knoll isn’t all roses and kittens and, for me, that makes this story more realistic and much more enjoyable. McCorkle also did a great job maintaining consistency within The Secret of Spruce Knoll. For example, the channelers are supposed to be tied to the earth so, when they go into the city, Eren starts to feel sick. Little details like this, which could easily have been overlooked, are worked into the story. Eren and Aidens relationship is a thing to behold and I cannot wait for book two!

The cover:

At the time of this review, there are two different covers for The Secret of Spruce Knoll. The picture at the top of this page is the cover on my copy of the book, so I’ll talk about it first. I love this cover. A lot. This shade of blue is beautiful, and it really contrasts well with her skin. The green leaves on the upper right side of her face give the impression that Eren is in the forest and her glowing hand suggests she is practicing magic. One thing I find very intriguing, but it’s probably unintentional, is the glow coming from her hand. Looking carefully, the glow makes the letter “M”, and Heather McCorkle’s last name starts with an “M”. I think this is a really cool, probably unintentional, symbol.

There is also a newer cover for The Secret of Spruce Knoll. This cover (pictured on the lower right) is for a very special purpose. Here is what Heather McCorkle’s website has to say about it…

Book summary:

But there’s more (there always is)… Keira finds out that she isn’t just any guardian, she’s the prophesied child “of sun and moon”, destined to bring about the end of the house of Gammen which rules over the Mogdoc Empire.

What’s a mogdoc, you ask? Think of a gremlin crossed with a swamp monster, then give it supernatural speed, agility, strength, and a taste for human blood.

Set in a picturesque rural, river town in southern Ohio, Of Sun & Moon has been described by readers as Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Harry Potter.”

You know those little fairies that steal into your room at night, take your tooth, and leave you a quarter richer? They’re cute, they’re tiny, they’re harmless, and they leave glitter by your window, right? Wrong. Everything you think you know is a lie. Growing up, Keira has always known she is special: she is a tooth fairy… and not the kind your parents told you about. Keeping her secret from her friends is the hardest thing she has ever had to do, and it leads to some serious complications.

The premise of this book is amazing. I haven’t even heard of a tooth fairy novel before, I’ve read about vampires, werewolves, fairies, mermaids, and angels … but not the tooth fairy. For me that means that the plotline of this story isn’t one that has been overwritten. It’s original and brings a fresh angle. I’m always looking for really good paranormal or fantasy books, and Of Sun and Moon really hit the mark on both counts. Throughout the story, I really see the characters develop. I see the relationships grow and change. Butler gives us a great look into the characters’ thoughts and personalities, not just by what they say, but also by the choices they make. Of Sun and Moon has a great balance between telling and showing.

Most of the high school aspects of this story are right on the mark, especially the relationships, and because of this, I feel really connected to Keira. I understand the whole high school emotional rollercoaster and, on top of that, she deals with being so different from everyone else. It’s inspiring. Some of the ‘plot twists’ weren’t very surprising to me, and I can’t tell if they are meant to be that way, to pull your attention away from the even bigger surprises, or if I just happened to figure them out.

The cover:

This cover is beautiful. The girl’s laid back, classic pose makes me feel like she’s really comfortable sitting there in that dress… I am NEVER that comfortable in a dress! Not fair. The red dress with the pale skin and black hair makes the girl look really striking. Not many covers match the actual story, but in this one, right now, I remember the exact scene Keira wore that dress and had her hair like that. It’s really cool, and it ties me into this book in a unique way because the recognition only comes from having read the story. So, go read it, so you too can feel that connection!

Rating: 4 out of 5 hearts: great book!

Book Summary: (shortened for length)

Sam thinks she’s months away from freedom. After spending her life in a secret school, rented out to the rich and powerful as a paranormal spy, she is ready to head to college like any normal eighteen-year-old.
Only Sam isn’t normal. She reads minds. And just before her big going-away party, she links to the mind of a young man who changes everything…
For what awaits her on her eighteenth birthday isn’t a trip to college, but an unexpected nightmare from which she may not be able to escape.
To survive, they must work together….”

Having the power to read minds isn’t all fun and games. Sam is being used for her powers to satisfy sketchy clients, whose thoughts she really wishes she couldn’t read. Rent-a-kid hasn’t been too horrible—they have given her a lot of freedom, but when she sees a boy who seems out of place questions start to form in her mind. Discovering the mysterious boy, Drake’s, secrets will lead to chaos and, finally, answers.

       One unique thing about this story is its thriller/mystery aspect. I knew the ending pretty quickly but I didn’t know how the ending was reached. The things that happen, the people they met, the secrets they unravel -- all these pieces are what make this story so surprising. I got a strong feel right away for Sam’s character. She threatens bullies, and I get the feeling that these ‘tough girl’ scenes are a first for Sam, revealing her inner strength. Kinrade definitely takes the time to introduce you to Sam: describing her thoughts, explaining her power, and examining her relationships with those closest around her.

            The mystery behind Drake is a big part of the novel. I didn’t get as much of an inside view to his thoughts, character, or emotions because Sam really didn’t get to be around him a whole lot. I know He can control minds and is super strong but at the end of this book he is still a mystery to me. This book flows really well; the parts where people are using their paranormal powers aren’t too difficult to follow and it all makes sense. The end is a cliffhanger that really makes me wish the second book was already out! I just want to keep reading Sam and Drake’s story… and get them completely figured out.

The Cover:

       This cover features a chain-style fence that is ripped open. I think this cover is more about the symbolism and the feel from the novel than anything else. It comes across, to me, as intense. I will admit that, at first glance, I thought this would be an inmate story… and I guess it kind-of was.

First Feature and Follow Friday

Q: Define what characteristics your favorite books share. Do they all have a kick a** heroine or is the hot love interest the Alpha Male?

I personally love alpha males, in stories. I feel they would be terrible in real life. When I read I really want the female to have her own strength. Yeah, the guy can help and be all tough but if he's always saving her she comes across as weak and my opinion of her lowers. Personally my favorite books are the ones where the girl can take care of herself but she still has that alpha male to help her out. Prime example: Divergent (by Veronica Roth). No doubt Tris can take care of herself, but Four is still there with his support, strength, and hotness. I guess I would say I am always on the lookout for a book that reaches a good compromise, if that fails bring out the tough chick. I have noticed in books where the girl is tough she still has a guy who will stand by her and helps. When it just has the alpha male the girl is weak and always needs saving.

Interview:

1) What was your inspiration when writing BECOME?

Desi’s story is a lot like my own. Well, minus the superpowers, and the demonic father (debatable). The concept that it was too late for me to change my life (from bad to good) was something I struggled with a lot during my teenage years. I pretty much figured it was set in stone . . . until some things happened in my early twenties that gave me the courage to start to turn things around.

Out of all that was born the question: What if the devil’s daughter only wanted to be good? And ta da! I had a story to tell.

2) Rain or Snow?

Snow!

3) I hear you are learning martial arts… what form?

Yeah, my whole family love the martial arts. Right now we are studying Kwon Shu karate, but I’ve studied Judo and Hap Ki Do before too. J

4) What research did you have to do for BECOME?

I researched Norse mythology quite a bit. I am Christian, so I felt reasonably comfortable in my knowledge of that theology, but Desi’s world is a combination of Norse and Christian beliefs (really, it’s a marriage of many mythologies, because I personally believe that there’s a lot of truth out there and it all tells the same story).

5) When did you know that you were going to pursue writing as a career?

Probably a couple years ago when I won my first writing contest. It was the first one I’d entered, but I really didn’t think I was a writer. I pretty much thought I was a poser and the contest would just prove it. Except it didn’t. J

6) Too hot or too cold?
I’m usually too cold. L I often have to wear those little fingerless gloves when I write!

7) What phrase do you say way too often?

LOL! Um, it changes. I get a word stuck in my head and there it goes over and over again. Probably the most dominant one is “Ya know what I mean?” Everyone’s like, “Yes, Ali. We know what you mean, already!”

8) Do you have a play-list for BECOME? If yes what is your favorite song on the list? (and if you wanted to share the entire playlist… ;) )

YES! Music is huge for me and inspires a lot of my writing (scenes, sometimes whole stories!).

9) Can you explain your love of all things ninja?

ROFL! I’m not sure! It’s kind of like a crazed obsession. ;) I really want to get my black belt. I feel like I’ve always quit things before I got really good at them, and if I could get a black belt, well … that would be like the ultimate proof that I wasn’t a quitter. Except I have a stupid body with a lot of health concerns and it might be that I can’t ever get that coveted black belt. But I can be a black belt writer!

So I decided to start applying the mindset of martial arts to my life, and to my writing. Focus, self-control, dedication, hard, hard work. The ninja is kind of representative of this state of mind—the black belt state of mind.

10) What is one thing you want readers to take away from BECOME?

That there’s still hope for us. No matter how far we’ve fallen, all the bad choices we’ve made—it’s never too late to make a new choice. A better choice.

11) A cruise or a trip to the beach?

THE. BEACH.

12) What is one thing most people wouldn’t know about you?

That my name isn’t actually Ali at all. J And it’s not a pen name either—I changed my name from Sandra to Alexandra when I was nineteen. Except, I didn’t ever make it official, lol! So on my driver’s license and everything it still says Sandra. I really need to do something about that!

13) Describe yourself in one word.

Hopeful.

14) How long did it take you to write BECOME?

It didn’t take that long to write, a few months, maybe. But it took me about two years to revise and make it readable!

15) Can you share any tidbits about the next book in Desi’s story?

Ooh. Tidbits. Are you trying to get a sneak peek, Lauren? ;)

Let’s see. The next book is titled DESOLATION. Michael returns, but maybe not in the way you might expect. The only hint I can give you beyond that is, the first half is narrated by Desi—but the second half is narrated by Michael. Now you can go stew on that and see if you can figure out what that means. ;)

16) Do you read other books while you write?

YES! I don’t find reading interferes too much with my own stories. And since I’m pretty much writing all the time, I’d go crazy if I couldn’t read!

17) What is your favorite form of caffeine?

Diet Coke!

18) Are you working on any projects besides Desi’s series?

I sure am! I’m a middle grade writer too, and I have three books I’m currently polishing up. I haven’t decided if I’m going to see if I can find an agent to represent them, or if I’m going to self-publish them.

And on the YA side, after Desolation, I will have a science fiction Cinderella retelling (THE BLOOD CROWN), and a very intense dystopian (CHILDREN OF THE GODS).

This story is really thought-provokingly good. Good as in– makes me want to cry in frustration, happiness, sadness, elation, and sympathy-- kind of good. This book is not all rainbows and unicorns… okay, well it does have witches, were-animals, vampires, and ghosts in it… but that’s not the point. The reason Raven speaks to me so forcefully is the touch of reality Suzy Turner mixes into this paranormal novel. Lilly has so much going on emotionally from her parents disappearing, having to moving to Canada, finally experiencing a loving family, to learning horrifying secrets about her past. I really like how the story is set up from the very beginning. Turner gives some background right up front, but within the first few chapters, more elements are revealed through dialogue and the reader following Lilly’s normal routine.

One of the first things that strikes me about Raven is that the main character, Lilly Taylor, is not named, nicknamed, nor goes by “Raven”. I just assumed that Raven would be her name, and it wasn’t. Don’t worry; the title is still very fitting, just in a slightly different way. I also really like the dialogue. It never seems forced or unnatural to me, and it has a very good, constant flow.

Apart from the emotional pull, this book also has a kick-butt paranormal plotline. Raven features were-animals, witches, vampires, and spirits while weaving the magic into the story seamlessly. Some parts of the story played out like I expected, but others parts were surprising.

Raven is a really amazing book, and I cannot wait to read Book Two: December Moon.

The Cover:

Okay the girl on the cover completely embodies my mental picture of Lilly. She looks like a lost, scared girl who is trying to hide from the world… and that’s exactly how she started out. Looking at this picture, I can’t help but compare this Lilly to the Lilly at the end of the book, and the changes are remarkable. I think the black and white color scheme is the perfect choice for this cover, and it makes Lilly POP! (Especially her eyes!)

I give Raven 4,5 out of 5 hearts: Very Highly recommended!!

So this week I was really slapped over the head in regards to publicizing my blog... I mean if I just sat here everyday and wrote a post no one would ever find out that this blog existed. No one. Okay, maybe one or two people would stumble across it but they probably wouldn't care and certainly wouldn't be interested enough to spread the word.

What does this have to do with me being slapped over the head you ask? Not much, other than the fact that I didn't have a Twitter. I've always had the motto that Facebook was for 'the mildly curious' while Twitter was for the stalkers, and maybe it is a little. Maybe. This week I realized that Twitter is actually a good way to spread the word about anything, not just a blog. So I caved and made an account. Yep. You heard me. I got a Twitter. Has anyone ever told you that it’s fun to wake up incased in darkness and confined in a coffin? Yeah, they lied. Vicky Hernandez wakes up buried alive only to learn that… well… she’s not really still alive, or is she? Astounded by mysterious traits that don’t all seem to add up, Vicky is only sure of one thing: she has to get out of this town. Vicky leaves her home (and two dead bodies) behind to start over in Chicago where she meets five amazing friends that will change her life forever.

I feel very connected to Vicky’s character; from the beginning, I sensed that she had a very distinct personality. One thing that stands out about Vicky is that she is not a weak little victim who hides behind her boyfriend; she is a very strong independent female lead that is very refreshing. Bloody Little Secrets is a fantastic novel that clearly illustrates the importance of trusting in oneself and the amazing impact the small act of acceptance can have on a person. The only thing that really bothers me about this book after I finished it was that it feels like there are a few loose ends that haven’t been tied up. Bloody Little Secrets moves along quickly and leaves you curious as to how things will unfold. This spin on the realm of vampires puts a fresh feel to life after death and leaves you wondering --- when can I join?

The cover:

The front cover of this book is, in my opinion, a very good choice. The girl’s piercing gaze drew my attention immediately and, the further I read into the book, the more fitting the cover appeared. All in all a stellar cover for a fang-tastic novel!

I give this book 4 out of 5 hearts: great book!

1. What is your favorite Television show/Movie?

A: Oh, man. I have so many. I absolutely love HAVEN. I also like to watch GHOST HUNTERS, SURVIVOR & HAWAII FIVE-O. Don't snort at the last one. I'm totally in love with Alex O'Loughlin and will watch him in absolutely anything. He used to star as a vampire in MOONLIGHT. LOVED that show. *fans self*

2. What was your inspiration for Bound?

A: ACK! This sounds so cliche. Like . . . couldn't I come up with an original answer to this question? *ahem* Okay, brace yourself. It was a dream. See, I told you it was cliche. *shakes head* So embarrassing.

3. What's a perfect day for you? (sunny, rainy, etc.)

A: I have to close my eyes for this one because I don't think it exists in my world. *deep breath* Aw, there it is. I wake up to the pulsing beat of a ceiling fan as it circulates the ocean breeze drifting through the open window. Crisp white sheets drape across my body and hunk I'm all tangled up with. Waves crash up on the beach a short distance from us. We'll walk there later, but not before he makes me eggs benedict, fresh squeezed orange juice and massages my scalp while washing my hair. *cough* Yeah, right. Honestly, I'd be happy with a bowl of Cheerios, a glass of Tang and two hours of uninterrupted time to write. The beach would be nice, though.

4. How difficult was it for you to make up a whole new world?

A: Ha! I have a warped imagination, so not difficult at all. For me, creating is the easy part of writing.

5. In 1-2 sentences please explain why we should read Bound?

A: Bound is one of those books where you can completely lose yourself in the story, forget about your own problems, and experience something that makes you feel emotions you never knew you had. We all need to get away from reality once in a while and reading Bound can do that.

6. What do you do when you experience the dreaded writer's block?

A: UGH! I think writer's block is different for each writer. Some get stuck in their story and have trouble figuring out where to take it next, while others dry up and have no words to give. I've never had problems like that. I lay awake nights trying to shut my brain down because it's so full of ideas and words. Writer's block comes to me when I can't get into my "ZONE." There are so many distractions in life, so many things on my do-list that call to me—email, blogging, *ahem* interviews, etc.—that drag me away from my writing, that when I finally get the time to do it, I often FREEZE and forget how to write. I wish I had a cure, but to be honest, I just have to glue my butt to the chair and not leave until the words start spewing onto the computer screen.

7. What is one thing you have never done but always wanted to try?

A: I actually have a very long "bucket" list, but if I had to choose one thing, I'd love to go to New York and see a Broadway musical.

8. Do you have a music playlist for Bound?

A: I WISH! There have been a few songs that have come and gone during the writing process, but I've never made a list. I'd LOVE it if some fans did that for me—sent me a song or two that made them think of the story between Kira and Octavion. Or even the friendship between Kira and Lydia.

Get a GLIMPSE of this great book!

Title: Glimpse (Zellie Wells book 1)

As Avery takes her hand and leads her out onto the makeshift dance floor, Zellie is overwhelmed by her first vision of his death; shocking because not only are they both covered in his blood, but they’re old, like 35, and she is pregnant….”

Its not often you get a look into the future, but Zellie Wells gets that privilege. Oh Joy. As this ‘gift’ causes first conflict then difficult choices and mass confusion, Zellie begins to question the value of her newfound ability. Trying to make sense of the chaos that follows, Zellie is forced to choose between the people she cares about the most. This story leads you down a road full of one teenager’s tough choices, overwhelming discoveries, and steadfast determination.

Zellie is a well-rounded character and while she comes across (mostly) as a confident individual, she does have some major insecurity issues when it comes to Avery. I really like how Glimpse doesn’t just jump into the main plotline; Benefiel takes the time to introduce you to the characters and their history with one another.

The beginning of this book was well paced and captivating, but by the third quarter, it started getting very busy. I thought I might need a spreadsheet to keep up with all these sub-plots! I really liked the main plotline, especially the romantic issues between Zellie and Avery, but the sub-plots with Zellie’s mom got confusing. I felt that her mom reacted uncharacteristically and unrealistically to certain situations (at least it was hard to wrap my head around her actions) and, towards the end, she really started to get on my nerves. Luckily, since this is only the first book, Zellie’s mom still has time to get back into my good graces.

Throughout Glimpse I really came to respect and admire the loyalty and amazing lengths Claire (the best friend) would go to ensure her friends happiness. I was also very intrigued by a mysterious stranger who I cannot wait to hear more about! This is a good fast read and is well worth your time!

Cover:

Oh the irony. The girl on the cover is looking down and when I first saw this book I correctly guessed it had something to do with seeing something unseen by most… well, the title helped a little. I really like the soft colors used on the cover and, of course, the glitter Valerie Wallace did a great job on this cover! Oh, the girl on the front is gorgeous, and I want her eye-makeup. Badly. Color me jealous.

I give this book a Four out of Five hearts: Great Book!

** This book does have some mild sexual material and I would not recommend for children under 14.**

This book cover screams “Read me I’m an amazing book about mermaids”. Well yeah. This cover is beautiful and the details really make it stand out -- Melissa Williams really nailed it. The water droplets and lightning in the background focalize the mermaid and highlight the title and tail. A stunning cover for a stellar book! Don’t miss Alexandra Shostak’s amazing designs inside the book. They rock.

I give this book 4.5 out of 5 hearts: Very Highly Recommended.

Beautiful Demons

This book is a page-turner with an ending that will leave you scrambling to get book two. I can already tell that Beautiful Demons lays the groundwork for a marvelous series. Harper makes many startling revelations that invoke more questions and not nearly enough answers to satisfy my mounting curiosity. Especially since Harper finds it impossible to stick to the rules —even if this is her final warning…

This book features two very different romantic interests. I’m looking forward to the second book to see how things play out between these rivals! Beautiful Demons is a magical book that transports you into the mind of a confused girl who just she wishes that she were normal. Haunted by a past she can’t escape and uncertain as to what her future will be, Harper starts her life over. Again. This book will captivate you and leave you wondering… “What’s up with those cheerleaders?” Wonderfully alluring and severely mysterious, Beautiful Demons will shock you when you least expect it!

The Cover:

This cover by Robin Ludwig Design, Inc. is GORGEOUS. Having the girl looking down at the necklace creates a truly wonderful effect. The bright blue of the stone really stands out and is completely accurate with the details in the story. This cover art draws your eye and makes you never want to look away.

I give this book 4 out of 5 hearts: Great book and a lead into, what I believe will be, a must read series!

BECOME Intrigued

Title: BECOME: a novel of Desolation

Author: Ali Cross

Book Summary:

“Sixteen-year old Desolation Black wants nothing more than to stay in Hell where it’s cold and lonely and totally predictable. Instead, she’s sent back to Earth where she must face the evil she despises and the good she always feared.

When Desi is forced to embrace her inner demon, she assumes her choice has been made—that she has no hope of being anything other than what her father, Lucifer, has created her to be. What she doesn’t count on, is finding a reason to change—something she’s never had before—a friend.”

Desolation Black has the fate of the world in her hands. Literally. In the battle between the Light and the Darkness, she alone holds the key. Having grown up, literally, in Hell Desi hasn’t had what you would call a “normal” childhood. I really like that, throughout the novel, I understand what Desi is feeling and why she chooses to do things, the way she does. This novel is powerful, well written, and has a wonderful flow. This story kept me on my toes, and I loved being surprised by some of the decisions that were made!

That said Become has, in my opinion, a distinctive dark feel. Many of the themes and actions in the story lean towards this darkness and, for me, made the book less enjoyable. I do, however, understand why these parts are included. The darkness has to be there to explain who Desi is and what she has lived with her entire life. One cannot live in Hell and expect no sin or violence. I get that. Just be aware going into the book that it’s there. Because of the dark content (which includes drugs, violence, and sexual situations), I suggest that parents read it first for anyone under 16. Overall, the word I would use to describe this book is; Powerful.

The Cover;

If you can look at this cover and tell me it does not look powerful, I would have to say that you're blind. It is beautiful and all the elements work together to create an image that intrigues you and makes you want to delve deeper. The cover design (done by Ali Cross) and the cover art (done by Fanye L.O.) are both amazing and beautiful!

I give this book 4 out of 5 hearts; Great book! Because though it is darker, it is well written and intriguing.

A book you are BOUND to love!

The first thing that struck me about this book is its depth. The characters themselves are very deep… they have layers. I would just start to feel like I knew the characters when SURPRISE they would do something I didn’t expected. Take Kira for example; she loves her best friend Lydia like a sister, has an awful home life, and suddenly learns a secret that will change her life forever. No pressure. The way her character handles everything is, to me, remarkable. She will do anything to help her friend but she doesn’t just blindly jump into things. She thinks about the best move to make, and doesn’t let a pesky warrior bully her into submission. One thing that stood out for me about Kira is that she doesn’t have a perfect home life as many main characters do. She actually has to deal with several emotional things that make you want to step in and hug her.

This book is full of page-turning anticipation that, coupled with the amazing plotline, gives you a story you should not miss. This book is full of action, love, self-discovery, the tests of friendship, and having faith in those closest to you. A must read for all paranormal romance lovers!

The cover of this book is exquisite. The girl on the cover perfectly matches my image of Kira, the intensity in her gaze matches up exactly with her attitude. This book would be a great gift, especially if the receiver appreciates a well-written story that has a beautiful cover to match.

Okay people this book is worth reading. If nothing else, the cover deserves to be drooled over. This book is well written, well paced and simply well done! I received a copy of this book for my birthday from my best friend and after reading the summary; I knew it would be a home run. It didn’t disappoint. This book is full of Romance, Action and a Strong bond between two best friends.

I have always been a fan of Greek mythology and am always on the lookout for new books that incorporate it into the plot line. To me this is a Percy Jackson meets Romeo and Juliet refined and perfected novel. Suspenseful. Delicious. Waiting to be read by YOU. Besides, with all these twists and turns you will surely be on your toes up to the very end. The ending will leave you full of questions and desperately awaiting the next book.

This is a book that you can put on your bookshelf facing out so it's all your friends comment and want to borrow it. Okay maybe not, who would want to be parted from this book?
